STEM and Business: Fall Semester
From 2:00 pm to 3:50 pm
Join us this semester as we explore STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) in 3 different age groups. Last year, we did math lab, little physicists, paper airplanes, junior and extreme mad scientists, robotics and engineering, pre-algebra, java programming, movie marketing and fundraising, and more. Our STEM block is based on student interest. Families who sign up early will be directly involved in planning and organizing our semester. Even if your student signs up on the last day, he or she will have choice in classes, as our age groups are flexible and overlap.
Business classes and AP Computer Science will also be held during this block for the 13-18 age group.
STEM ages 5-8 will be learning about “The Four Elements” for the first seven weeks of class. This class will be taught by Ashley Kim. In ancient times people thought everything on Earth was made up of four “elements”: water, fire, earth, and air. In the first 7 weeks of this class, we’ll explore each of these.
We’ll build a floating Lego fortress, read Paddle-to-the-Sea, and create our own versions of Paddle to release at the river. We’ll learn how rocks are made and why earthquakes happen and build a volcano. We’ll find out how to know air is there even though we can’t see it, experiment with balloons, and learn what it takes to create fire.
If you’d like to help shape this portion of the STEM block, please ask your kids these questions (or any others that feel appropriate) and let me know their answers:
What’s interesting to you about water/fire/Earth/air?
What do you want to know about water/fire/Earth/air?
Also, we’ll be outside for much of the class (and hopefully going on a few mini field trips too), so come prepared.
