The Arts: Fall Semester

Artistic expression is vital to the development of our students, whether they plan to be engineers, builders, scientists or artists. Art exploration encourages students to think outside the box, break the rules and try new things. Join us this semester as we explore the arts in 3 different age groups. Last year, we did collage, ballet, painting, wood carving, soap stone carving, swing dance, piano, jam band, drama. movie making and more. Our arts block is based on student interest. Families who sign up early will be directly involved in planning and organizing our semester. Even if your student signs up on the last day, he or she will have choice in classes, as our age groups are flexible and overlap.
The 5-8 Arts Block The first semester for the 5-8 age group will focus on fun crafts and learning/practicing basic skills and the second semester will focus on learning about famous paintings/artists that the students choose and doing art projects based on them. Students will be encouraged to work independently, take pride in their art, have confidence in their own creativity, and have fun!
During this first semester, we will bring in our ceramics teacher for four weeks in October, and the other weeks will be taught by eNDVR crafty moms Ciana and Amber. Projects will include cubism art, tinfoil art, yarn pumpkins, making scratch off magic paper, pegboard cross stitching, color mixing experiments, mosaics, and more.
Supplies: We are asking that each family bring:
- two bottles of Elmer’s glue
- one small bag of hot glue sticks (standard size)
- Each student will need 1 white t-shirt that is in their size
- Other optional items we’d love to have you bring: washable markers (we can always use more!), some smooth rocks of various sizes and any toilet paper rolls or styrofoam that you have.
The 8-13 Arts Block will be taught by Corrina Spelts. “Art Attack” is designed to teach older kids a variety of art techniques and vocabulary. Kids will learn relevant subject matter that is sure to spark interest and increase their knowledge of art and art history. Students will work on a variety of concepts and techniques, focusing on different concepts each week. This class is taught using a multi sensory approach allowing for each child to be met at their skill level. Class concepts related to: •Perspective •Portraiture •Still Life •Realism and Abstract •Art History •Color Theory •Line and Patterning •Fundamental Composition Skills •Art Vocabulary Students will learn concepts of art for the first half of the term and work on a final project the last half of the term (parents will need to supply any needed art supplies for their child’s chosen project)
***Each student will need to bring the following to class on the first day: (These items will not be supplied by the instructor.)
- one 11″x17″ drawing pad (Charcoal drawing pad would be best) with a minimum of 30 pages. (Will remain at eNDVR for the term)
- one set of oil pastels and charcoal drawing set. All other supplies will be provided by instructor and/or eNDVR.
Music (5-13) After polling the families who registered early, we have decided to offer a general music class with a strong focus on singing. While 5-8 year olds are doing arts and crafts, the 8-13 year olds will be doing music with our new teacher Julienne. And then we’ll switch and the 8-13 group will do art with Corrina while Julienne does music with our younger students. Music class will include learning about rhythm, reading notes, learning about different instruments and styles of music, etc. The older students, depending on their interest, might learn about famous musicians or music around the world. The younger students will likely do more movement and song games. If the kids are wanting to perform, we might even have a little concert of some sort, either around the holidays or at the end of the semester in January.
Students not wishing to partake in music (or art) are welcome to do projects in the maker’s space. But we do ask that students commit to their choice for the semester. (They can try it for a week or two if they are unsure, but we just don’t want them bouncing back and forth for the sake of the teacher and the rest of the class.)
