I am a parent. Can I use iGet Math: Base 10 to strengthen my child’s math skills?

Yes! iGet Math: Base 10 demonstrates basic math concepts and allows children to explore math while having fun. We have purposely stayed away from the math drills that students see in school because the students who struggle can deeply benefit from an experiential and multi sensory approach.  In my ten years of teaching early primary students, I can attest that students who understood what the symbols that appear in math mean were more successful in math and much more happy during math time.  We can’t promise that iGet Math: Base 10 is going to be the best solution for every child, but if your child is struggling with math, this is a very different way to present math concepts that just might make sense for your child and help make math time a fun and rewarding experience.

I am a teacher. Can I use iGet Math: Base 10 in my classroom?

Absolutely!  In fact, iGet Math: Base 10 was born out of shortage of base ten blocks in my school.  During the creation phase of iGet Math we frequently gathered information from students and I personally used the app in my classroom to teach specific math concepts and strengthen my student’s understanding of basic computation.

We have taught and observed in many classroom situations and have brought these experiences into the design process for iGet Math: Base 10. Teachers can use iGet Math: Base 10 as a fun tool to demonstrate math concepts on a smart board. Then, they can allow students to recreate these demonstrations on their own iPads.

In addition, iGet Math: Base 10 comes with 96 quests that are aligned with kindergarten and first grade common core standards. Our assessment screen allows you to track a student’s ability to accurately complete a quest in a certain amount of time, making it a great formative assessment tool.

What is the suggested age for iGet Math: Base 10?

We would recommend this app for anyone age 3-7 and for older students who struggle with understanding basic math concepts. iGet Math: Base 10 allows teachers and parents to provide scaffolding for students of any age and ability level and supports students understanding of fundamental elements of math.

Some features that set us apart:

  • Interchangeable character blocks and backgrounds, each with their own with fun animations, can be selected to keep students interested and engaged.
  • Each part of the equation is highlighted and read out loud as it is touched, giving younger children an understanding of what numbers look like and allowing them to count virtual objects with one-to-one correspondence.
  • Blocks can be counted by ones and tens, expanding students understanding of base 10 concepts.
  • Equations are solved in a visual and engaging way, showing students what actually happens when we add and subtract.
  • Addends and answers can be hidden from the settings screen and revealed as a child counts all of the blocks, reinforcing the one-to-one correspondence between objects and numbers.
  • 96 common core quests (all with audio instructions) give kindergarteners and first graders even more of a challenge by asking them to count by tens, pick the greater or lesser number, regroup and more.
  • Assessment screen helps parents and teachers identify areas where a student may be struggling.

My child can see the answers. Are they learning anything, really?

This is not a math memorization app. It is a math understanding app. Many students who struggle with math do not have the foundation that helps them to understand what the symbols on a page represent. Memorization is important at some stage in the learning development, but we feel that a solid understanding of how math works will create more successful students in the long run and allow them more skills for critical thinking and solution finding. We do feel that your child will benefit from the repetition of our app and that some memorization will occur naturally. There has been much recent research to support the idea that children retain information they learn during play more successfully than in a “memorize and drill” situation.

That being said, if you feel that your child is at a point where the answer can be hidden, you can do so from the settings screen. The answer will be hidden as the equation is solved and can be revealed by counting the blocks.

My child has special needs. Is iGet Math: Base 10 for us?

Yes, yes, yes! My 17 year old daughter with autism loves this app. She is able to play it on her own without the need for much assistance. A student would get the most out of iGet Math: Base 10 if that student was able to tap, swipe, and pinch on the screen. No reading is required!

At every available opportunity we sought to use best practices in education to support all learners.  This app is aimed at being beneficial for exceptional children, struggling learners and gifted and talented students alike.
