College: Graduated from University of Montana with two degrees; Math and Computer Science
Work:
  • I have taught boys gymnastics for 3 years
  • I have been in the Montana Army National Guard for 11 years with one deployment to Iraq
  • I have work in an IT department for Consumer Direct for 8 months but will be moving on to pursue teaching
  • I do various jobs on the side, including fixing bikes, working on vehicles, maintaining and repairing sprinkler systems and working on computers
  • Teaching through the Adult Learning Center and tutoring at the college level along with volunteer work through the public library
  • I lead our Youth Group program through my church, Five Valleys Church of Christ
Interests:
  • Teaching: I enjoy teaching and try to take every opportunity to share my knowledge with others
  • Mountain biking, especially downhill
  • Climbing
  • Games, including board games, card games and computer games (those not as much though)
  • Hiking and exploring Montana
  • Snowshoeing
  • Learning new things!

Join Matt Detrick Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30-11:30 for math. This is a drop in class. One ticket purchases one day of class. You must purchase a ticket every time you wish to have your student attend this class.

In this class we explore the basic building blocks of computer programming, such as If, Else statements, Loops, Variables and Structure, using a few different programs, including scratch and logisim. Towards the end of the class we move into writing code using a specific language called Java. The student is not required to bring a computer as we have computers to use here. No knowledge of programming is required.

To be enrolled in this class, the student needs to be approved by Matt. This class builds on the basics learned in Beginning Programming and includes: integrating multiple sources of code, flow of control, receiving and handling user input, and storing information. It is a project based class with the end result being a stand alone piece of software. This class uses Java as its programming language. In this class we will practice addition and subtraction and begin looking at multiplication and division using a variety of methods with both the computer and paper and pencil. We will also begin to learn methods to help us solveĀ problems mathematically. There will be an introduction to graphing and geometry as well. There will be out-of-class work given.

In this class we will review multiplication and division and begin learning how to write and solve equations. We will also look at inequality, absolute value, probability and geometric problems. The Pythagorean theorem will be explored as well as perimeter, area and volume problems. Word problems will also be incorporated into all of these topics. There will be out-of-class work given.
