Missoula Childbloom Guitar Program Director Nathan Zavalney received his Childbloom teaching and directorship certification under the training of national Childbloom founder Kevin Taylor in September 2000. He has 27 years of experience with guitar in classical, jazz, and folk styles, and has performed as a guitarist, vocalist, and percussionist in solo and group settings. During his musical studies at the University of MT he focused on composition, jazz studies, and classical voice training. Nathan has studied guitar with Helena, MT based fingerstyle guitarist Darrel Casey, world renowned classical guitarist Janet Feder, and guitar, voice and percussion under the mentorship of composer, performer, and teacher Matthew Marsolek.
Nathan has taught music to students throughout the northwest U.S. and Canada for the last 18 years as a classroom teacher, private instructor, and visiting educator, including 2 years as the music teacher for the Missoula International School. Nathan has an extensive background as a facilitator for music camps and workshops, and has directed the Childbloom summer music and creative arts camp since 2002. During his time as a Childbloom instructor he has received four national awards recognizing the high quality of his teaching, as well as being awarded the 2011 national “Outstanding Childbloom Program” award for his directorship of the Missoula Program. Nathan’s focus as a teacher is to inspire students in their musical exploration and discovery by demonstrating and continually deepening his own curiosity and love of music. He is unabashedly playful at heart, and uses this quality to create a fun learning environment in his classroom.
