Our world is changing fast. We are asking the students in this next generation to be high tech leaders, creative thinkers and problem solvers. Yet, we are still determining our best and brightest by measuring a student’s ability to memorize information and take tests. For many of our students, this just doesn’t make sense. They tune out and stop caring because their classroom experience is not connected to their lives. In response to the growing need for an educational experience that engages students, challenges them and encourages them to grow, Learning With Meaning has developed a brand new program for the 2015-2016 school year. Students ages 10-18 can participate in each of our 4 project based terms: survive, express, innovate and connect.

survive

September 3, 2015-November 2, 2015

1432021452_networkStudents will develop and explore skills in primitive survival and agriculture. They will work on individual and group projects to help expand their knowledge of biology, chemistry, math and history. In these 8 weeks, students will build self confidence and develop leadership skills.

innovate

February 1, 2016-March 28, 2016

1432021492_Notebook_by_ArtdesignerStudents will learn about technology from the ground up. They will work in small groups on projects that help them understand the technology they use every day.  connect

April 11, 2016-June 6, 2016

1432021457_old-explorerv2In our final session, students will learn about the world they live in. They will be immersed in the human and geological history of Montana. Students will complete individual and group projects that give them a deeper understanding of the cultures that have called Western Montana home. Students will expand their knowledge of earth science, biology, anthropology, geography, and history in this 8 week session.

two student groups, two levels of learning

In the 2015-2016 school year, we will have two student groups: the Voyagers and the Trailblazers.

The Voyagers (ages 10-14) will spend three afternoons a week working on projects that challenge them and keep them thinking. Their 3.5 hours of weekly classroom time (1 afternoon per week) will be spent drawing connections between their field experiences and an age appropriate understanding of traditional 4th-8th grade content. The Voyagers will work as a team to plan and blog about their experiences. They will have the opportunity to participate in Friday field trips. These trips will range from adventures in the outdoors to apprenticeship experiences and will follow our survive-express-innovate-connect themes.

The Trailblazers (ages 12-18) will work with parents and teachers to determine individual learning goals. Three afternoons a week, students will work on individual and team projects related to our theme. Trailblazers will spend 3.5 hours of classroom time (1 afternoon per week) researching and discussing topics related to the week’s field work. Each student will be responsible for a blog where they will document their experience and connect their learning to more traditional subjects. Students will be expected to complete up to 30 minutes of daily work outside of the classroom. Trailblazers are required to have a smartphone or tablet (preferably an iOS device) with camera, video and audio recording capabilities and cellular or wi-fi internet access. Trailblazers will also have the opportunity to participate in Friday field trips. These trips will range from adventures in the outdoors to apprenticeship experiences and will follow our survive-express-innovate-connect themes.

three options – full and part time

Project+Fridays

Our project based learning group will meet Monday through Thursday from 12:00-3:30. One of these days will be a classroom day, where we will document, connect, and expand our learning. The other three days will be spent working in the field and on our projects. On Fridays, we will meet at 9:30 and spend an entire day on an adventure or learning from local experts. We might head out on a kayak trip down the Clark Fork to retrace the path that others took. We might head to the University to learn more about film editing. We might go on a wilderness trek, build a fire and cook a meal. Friday trips will relate to our 8 week themes and will be rich with experiential learning and confidence building activities.

Project Only

Our project based learning group will meet Monday through Thursday from 12:00-3:30. One of these days will be a classroom day, where we will document, connect, and expand our learning. The other three days will be spent working in the field and on our projects.

Full Time Students

Full time students will work with our teachers to determine individual learning goals. Students can work independently from 9:30-11:30 using online coursework or participate in classes at eNDVR’s homeschool learning center. Teachers will be available to tutor students on difficult concepts or to offer alternative ways of learning new material. In the afternoon, they will join our project based learning group and participate in our survive-express-innovate-connect project.
